About the Work:

Handspring Puppet Company’s Little Amal is a 12-foot-tall puppet representing a 10-year-old Syrian refugee. Following her original appearance in the 2019 Obie Award-winning play The Jungle, Little Amal became the central figure of The Walk, an international project that brought attention to the experiences of displaced children and asylum seekers.

After traveling more than 5,000 miles across Europe, Little Amal arrived in New York City in 2022. Directed, written, and conceived by Tea Alagić, her journey through Lincoln Center invited audiences to experience the campus through the eyes of a refugee child newly arriving in the city.

The work brought together theatre, music, movement, and public participation, including a New Orleans-style second-line parade led by musicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center, with music by Kareem Roustom and Antonín Dvořák.
