About the Work:
Binibon, with music by Elliott Sharp and a libretto by Jack Womack, is a music-theater work based on the 1981 murder of Richard Adan, a young actor and night manager at the Binibon café, by Jack Henry Abbott. Moving between fact and alternative history, the work examines a crime that shocked New York and the cultural establishment that had helped secure Abbott’s release from prison.

Tea Alagić developed and directed the 2009 production at The Kitchen, combining live music and theatrical storytelling to evoke the atmosphere of the early-1980s East Village. Binibon is both a story of a murder and a portrait of a neighborhood—and an era—on the edge of transformation.
